Work a Spell with Crochet

There's always a way to add a little magic to your life and especially into items that you make you by hand. Here's how I added a special touch to my amigurumi hearts that I made for friends.

My First Amigurumi Craft - A Heart

The first time I managed to work up the courage to try amigurumi was when I decided I wanted to make little hearts for my friends before I moved overseas. I found a cute video I thought looked easy enough to follow, grabbed my yarn, some stuffing, dried rose petals and got to work.

Why dried rose petals? Well they still smelled absolutely lovely even though I had dried them almost a year prior to this project and because of their symbolism. The petals were from pink roses. Pink roses represent gentleness, happiness, admiration, gratitude and appreciation. Pink roses are often given to someone you might admire, friends, family, lovers. It's a gentler love compared to red roses.

As with any good spell, intention is key to putting the energy you need into it. For these hearts I thought of all the fun times I had with my friends, the laughs we shared, and of course looking forward to the future with them. The energy you put into a project gets caught up in the yarn and weaved into it. Naturally for smaller projects like this it can be easier to stay in a good mood and focus your intentions.

While you might not always be able to do this, I know how frustrating trying a new pattern can be or not understanding something, it might be best to leave it for another time. Not only will save yourself whatever frustration (and in my experience many mistakes) you also won't risk the chance of weaving any of that energy into your project.

So the next time you're looking to crochet something, remember that you can always weave a little extra magic into it.

There are so many items that you can do this with as well.

  • Dried flowers

    • A variety of dried flowers can be used for something like this

      • Sunflowers - happiness, loyalty, strength

      • Red Roses - love, passion, romance

      • Yellow Roses - joy, friendship, new beginnings

      • Jasmine - love, purity, motherhood, honor

    • Any flower that has significance to you and/or whoever the project is for

  • Crytals

    • Rose Quartz - love, friendship

    • Clear Quartz - purity, cleansing, improve focus and clarity

    • Tigers Eye - inner strength, courage, self-confidence

    • Amethyst - calmness, healing, balance

    • Birthstones

    • Again any crytal that has special significance to you or the receiver

  • Scraps of Fabric

    • Cotton - abundance of comfort, innocence, reminder of steady growth (Buddha approved)

    • Linen - purity, holiness, renewal, prosperity (hisotrically used in sacred texts)

    • Wool - purity, protection, wisdom (repeatedly referenced in the Bible)

    • Hemp - grounding, protection (sacred plant in Hinduism)

    • Silk - divinity, transformation, enlightenment, wealth (used for suture stitches by ancient Asian cultures)

    • Scraps from a loved ones clothing that you or the receiver want to hold close

There are so many more things that can be added to the list like dried herbs (most commonly sage), pictures, symbols, runes, poems or spells. Naturally depending on your cultural background your list could look a lot different from mine.

And then of course we have intention.
